David B. Webster
1962 - 2009
Along with the entire Cleveland legal community, we mourn the loss
and also acknowledge the accomplishments of our deceased friend
and partner, David Webster. David was a skilled trial lawyer devoted
to the profession and the community at large. But first and foremost,
he was a loving husband and father of four, who will be missed by everyone.
David Webster was a commercial lawyer with broad experience,
including matters involving banking, commodity trading, securities, technology, real estate, intellectual property, and environmental law. David had extensive trial experience including significant bench and jury trials in both the state and federal courts and had particular expertise in handling claims involving difficult valuation or damage issues, important public policy issues/or and little or no established legal precedent.
David also had significant, in-depth experience in pollution trading. He founded the Clean Air Conservancy in 1992, a non-profit entity set up to acquire and retire pollution allowances. The Conservancy was dubbed one of the 10 best small environmental non-profits by Outside Magazine. Shortly after it was formed and has been a leading participant in the U.S. pollution markets throughout its existence. It now holds the largest bank of retired pollution credits in the U.S. David's articles on emissions trading issues have been published in professional and academic publications.
David also was actively involved in the Cuyahoga County Bar Association (Vice President / President Elect: Member, Board of Trustees/Executive Committee; Chair, Judicial Selection Committee), the Federal Bar Association (Board of Trustees, former Chair, Government Relations Committee) and the American Bar Association (SEER). He had taught and spoken before professional groups on a variety of topics and had served as an instructor at the National Institute of Trial Advocacy's trial skills programs.
David graduated magna cum laude from Case Western Reserve University School of Law where he was an editor of the Law Review. He was listed in the Crain's Cleveland 40 Under 40. He had been named an Ohio "Super Lawyer" (2007, 2008 and 2009) and was rated "AV" in the Martindale Hubbell directory.
